Brothers Cédric and David Sane set up their own sportswear brand. In keeping with this, they also launched a sports club, the Sane Club, last summer. Thanks to the partnership between Groupe Mutuel and Sane Active, around 20 members of the Sane Club were able to take part in this year's Grand Prix de Berne. In this interview, Cedric Sane tells us more about Sane Active and the Sane Club.
Groupe Mutuel: What does Sane Active mean?
Cedric Sane: Sane Active embodies what we want to experience: a healthy approach to an active lifestyle, whether in sports or in everyday life. Thanks to our roots in Valais and Côte d’Ivoire, we learnt early on in life how wonderful it feels to have a healthy body and mind. We want to embody this with Sane Active. Above all, Sane is also our family name. So we are literally “living” our brand!
What is the idea behind Sane Active? Tell us more about the history of your sportswear...
When the Swiss Federal Council imposed the first lockdown, we came up with the idea of setting up Sane Active. We set out head on and brought the first rain jacket onto the market within a few months. Right from the start, the idea was to package a “sane” lifestyle in multifunctional sports products. And this has never changed. Since then, we have produced several hundred products and established ourselves in the running sector.
What products do you offer and what is your target group?
We offer an “active” and a “recovery” line. In these, we focus on products in the “Running & Exploring” area. In addition to many other products, we develop shorts for running as well as T-shirts and hoodies to help the body and mind recuperate during the recovery phase.
The target group is easy to explain: anyone who has, or wishes to have, a healthy approach to an active lifestyle.
What sets you apart from other sportswear brands?
We don't just see our clothes as sportswear, but as clothes for people with an active lifestyle. For us, bringing multifunctional products to the market is at the forefront of pursuing a balanced lifestyle.
How do you combine sports and fashion?
We try to combine current fashion trends with functional products. For us, you have to feel good in your appearance in order to perform well in sport. And clothes play a decisive role in this.
What is the Sane Club, how long has it been around and how many members are there now?
The Sane Club is an attempt to share the active lifestyle of Sane Active with everyone. We organise running sessions and other sports activities that are open to everyone. The focus is not on sport, but on bringing joy to our bodies and minds alike. We started last summer with around 15 people in incredibly high temperatures on the Aar River in Bern. Today, our group has grown to just over 280 like-minded people.
What is the mission of the Sane Club?
To create an environment in which people can enjoy and discover sport without pressure. For us, the best thing is to bring people together who can share their passion for exercise. Our top priority is always that we are not a club for competitive sport, but rather that we have a healthy attitude to exercise: everything is “sane”.
You have already taken part in the Kerzerslauf with the Sane Club. How was that?
Great! Right from the meeting point, the mood in the group was incredible – despite the rain and cold. The team had fun and enjoyed the running. Suddenly felt a bit like a team sports event.
This certainly had an impact on the performance of the participants, as there is no other explanation for all the personal bests.
How did you hear about Groupe Mutuel?
It is clear to us that we only want to work with companies that have the same approach to sport and activity as we do. We already knew Groupe Mutuel from various races, so we all knew directly who to contact.
Cédric, are you…
Interval Training or mountain running?
100 % mountain running… because of my Valais roots…
Fitness centre or outdoors?
As long as it's not raining, you'll find me outside.
A morning person or a night owl?
If I’m honest: a night owl…
Hoodie or hoodless?
Hoodie!
Tracksuit bottoms or chinos?
Sane Active tracksuit bottoms ;)
Bern or Valais?
A mixture – you can't have one without the other!
