Dental and orthodontic care for adults and children: what basic health insurance reimburses… and what it doesn’t
Basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG) only provides reimbursement for dental treatment rendered necessary by a serious illness or an accident.
There is no provision under LAMal/KVG for the reimbursement of routine dental care. So you have to pay for the following treatments yourself:
- treatment of decay
- annual checkups
- scaling
- routine dental problems
- orthodontic treatment (imaging, braces, teeth and jaw straightening)
- implants
- root canal treatment
- crowns
- etc.
If you wish to have these treatments reimbursed, you need to take out supplemental insurance.
