Completing your civilian or military service

Steps to take as regards your insurance

During your military or civilian service, you are automatically covered by military insurance.

Whether during military recruit school, civilian service, a long service or during practice period, you are automatically insured by the Swiss Confederation. Therefore, you do not have to pay the premiums for basic health insurance.

You can suspend your basic health insurance by presenting a marching or civilian service order for a period of at least 61 consecutive days. This measure does not apply to shorter service periods, such as military refresher courses.

What must I do?

You must send us a copy of your marching order or convocation, indicating your surname, first name, client number and address as well as your date of birth using one of the three following channels:

Once you have finished your service, please send us a copy of your service record booklet or your certificate of incorporation using one of the above channels.

Terms and conditions

  1. Suspension of basic insurance is granted if your period of service is due to last at least 61 consecutive days (Art. 3, para. 4 of the Swiss Federal Law on Health Insurance).
  2.  Medical benefits covered and payable under the compulsory health insurance (LAMal/KVG) will be suspended during the service period.
  3. Any change in the length of your incorporation period must be announced in order to prevent your insurance from being discontinued.
  4. Any supplemental insurance under the Federal Law on Insurance Contracts (LCA/VVG) will remain in force during your service period and you will continue to receive premium invoices.
